History of the Humane Society:
In the 1970's, a group of citizens interested in preventing animal cruelty founded the Humane Society of Shenandoah County. Since that time, these volunteers have made a significant impact in the lives of our county's animals and its residents. All our members are volunteers who are willing to donate both their time and their services to protect our county's animals and to improve the quality of life for its residents. In 1999, the Humane Society received its non-profit status and has been operating as a 501c3 organization for more than ten years. Our only source of income is provided by fundraising events, grants, bequests and individual donations. All our members are volunteers.
All of HSSC's programs are designed to keep pets from entering the animal shelter in Edinburg and promoting responsible pet ownership.
The Humane Society of Shenandoah County provides community outreach by:
- Promoting an aggressive spay/neuter program
- Providing veterinary financial assistance to our residents
- Networking with rescues and no-kill shelters
